THE RESORT
Introduction
Fernie is a destination for mountain lovers who want deep powder, steep bowls, and a genuine mountain-town atmosphere.
Fernie Alpine Resort is in south-eastern British Columbia, approximately 5 km from the historic City of Fernie. Its five alpine bowls, extensive tree skiing and steep terrain make it particularly attractive to confident skiers and snowboarders, while lower-mountain learning areas provide progression for novices and children.
Tucked away beneath the Lizard Range in the Canadian Rockies, Fernie combines world-class natural snowfall with a relaxed, welcoming community. The resort averages approximately 9 metres of snow annually, making it one of the snowiest resorts in British Columbia.

THE EXPERIENCE
Why Fernie?
Deep powder. Five alpine bowls. Short lift lines. And a genuine mountain-town experience.
Fernie is best suited to travellers who prioritise natural snowfall, bowls, glades and challenging terrain over extensive nightlife or mega-resort amenities. Its 1,082 m vertical and five bowls provide considerable variety for advanced and expert guests, including groups seeking a strong skiing focus.
- Legendary Powder: Averaging ~9 metres of annual snowfall, Fernie is one of the snowiest resorts in British Columbia. Deep powder days are frequent.
- Five Alpine Bowls: Lizard, Cedar, Snake Eyes, Currie and Timber — each offering different characters from steep chutes to open powder fields.
- Tree Skiing Paradise: Extensive gladed terrain throughout the resort, perfect for all-weather skiing when visibility drops.
- Authentic Mountain Town: A historic coal-mining town with genuine local character, independent restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Value Proposition: Generally more affordable than larger Canadian resorts, with less crowding and shorter lift lines.
Families and developing skiers can use the learning areas, lessons and lower-mountain terrain. However, Fernie should not be treated as a predominantly beginner resort. The combination of on-mountain lodging and a separate historic town allows travellers to choose between slope convenience and broader dining and shopping access.
TRAVEL
Getting There
The journey to Fernie takes you through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Canadian Rockies.
From Australia
There are no direct flights from Australia to Fernie. Australian itineraries typically connect through a North American gateway (Los Angeles, Vancouver, or San Francisco) and continue to either Calgary International Airport (YYC) or Canadian Rockies International Airport at Cranbrook (YXC).
| Gateway | Airport | Road Transfer to Fernie | Best Suited To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary | YYC | ~300 km / ~3.5 hours | More international flight options |
| Cranbrook | YXC | ~100 km / ~1.25 hours | Shorter final transfer |
By Shuttle/Transfer
Tunnel49 provides a seasonal airport shuttle between Calgary and Fernie. Book in advance and confirm departure times, luggage allowances and flight-delay policies for the 2026–27 season.
The seasonal Fernie Stoke Shuttle connects parts of town and the resort. Check operating dates, stops and timetable rather than assuming it will match every flight or accommodation.
Driving
Self-driving offers flexibility but requires winter experience. Winter tyres or chains are legally required on many British Columbia routes from 1 October to 31 March. The drive from Calgary follows Highway 1 through the Rockies and south via Highway 3 — spectacular but potentially challenging in winter conditions.
Travel Documentation
Australian citizens flying into Canada typically need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before departure. Verify individual eligibility and current Canadian entry rules before ticketing.

Live Conditions
Check the live snow report and lift status each morning before heading out. Terrain opening is affected by snowfall, visibility, avalanche control, wind and operational conditions.
Avoid relying solely on an older downloaded map, as lift, trail and safety information can change between seasons.
ON-MOUNTAIN ACCESS
Lift Pass Options
Plan your mountain access with date-based lift tickets and multi-day options.
Fernie uses date-based lift tickets, with online advance purchase generally offering better value than buying at the window. Early booking offers for three or more days may save up to 25%, subject to the annual product release, eligible dates and purchase deadline.
Multi-Day Lift Tickets
Multi-day tickets offer the best per-day value. Purchase online in advance for the best rates. Learning-area tickets are normally purchased at the resort ticket window.
Epic Pass / RCR
Fernie is an Epic Pass / Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) partner. Access depends on the specific Epic product held, its number of included days, reservation or identification requirements, restrictions and current terms.
Note: Fernie is not an Ikon Pass resort.
Season Passes
Season-pass options include Fernie-specific products and an RCR Rockies Upgrade providing access to other participating Resorts of the Canadian Rockies destinations.
⚠️ REVIEW NEEDED: All 2026–27 prices, age categories, blackout dates, refund/transfer rules and product conditions must be confirmed when passes go on sale. Do not assume previous-season policies will continue unchanged.

Ski & Snowboard Rentals
Equipment hire options to get you on the mountain.

Group and private lessons are available for all levels, from first-timers to advanced skiers seeking to master the bowls and glades. Multi-day programs often include progression tracking.
Children's Lessons — Griz Kids
The Griz Kids Centre is a licensed occasional-care facility for children aged 3–5. Its formats combine supervised indoor play with ski or snowboard instruction. It is not an all-day conventional daycare service or universal drop-off childcare. Booking limits apply.
Families should confirm lesson duration, lift-pass and rental inclusions, meeting points, toilet-training or care requirements, required forms and cancellation conditions before payment.

NEED TO KNOW
Other Information
Practical details for individuals, groups and families.
Altitude
Fernie rises from 1,052 m at the base to 2,134 m at the summit. Start gradually, remain hydrated and seek medical evaluation for serious or persistent symptoms.
Currency
Currency is Canadian dollars (CAD). Cards are widely accepted, but carrying a small amount of cash is sensible. Taxes are generally added at checkout.
Tipping
For table service, tipping of 15–20% is customary in Canada. Tipping is also expected for shuttle drivers, ski instructors and other service providers.
Weather & Clothing
Average winter temperature is about −5°C, but mountain conditions can change quickly. Pack insulating layers, a weatherproof outer shell, gloves, goggles and sun protection.
Insurance
Purchase comprehensive cover that specifically includes snowsports, driving, medical treatment and medical evacuation. Australia and Canada do not have a reciprocal public healthcare agreement.
Helmet Policy
A snow-sports helmet is strongly recommended. Confirm any lesson, terrain-park or activity-specific mandate.
Medical
Elk Valley Hospital serves the local area. On the mountain, contact ski patrol; for emergencies, call 911. Do not assume any medical facility operates as a walk-in clinic.
Electricity
Canada uses Type A and Type B plugs at 120V. Australians need a suitable plug adapter and should confirm appliance voltage compatibility.
Driving
Vehicles travel on the right in Canada. Allow additional time for snow, ice, reduced visibility and road disruptions.
Connectivity
Arrange international roaming, a travel SIM or another mobile-data option before arrival. Download essential booking and shuttle information for offline access.
Planning for Groups & Families
- Individuals & Couples: Choose on-mountain accommodation for maximum slope time or town lodging for dining variety and local atmosphere
- Groups: Condos and townhomes can provide shared kitchens, laundry and communal space. Coordinate lift products, rentals and ability-based lesson groups before arrival
- Families: Match the resort carefully to each family member's skiing level. Book Griz Kids sessions early and arrange separate care plans where its ages, session structure or booking limits do not meet the family's needs
Useful Links
For all travellers: build flexibility into the itinerary. Weather can affect flights, roads, shuttles, lift operations and activity availability, while restaurants and services may reduce hours outside peak periods.
